A14 Toll Scheme fears

Oct 25, 2013

The A14 Trunk Road provides one of the major transport routes through the region that Barker Storey Matthews operate in.  With momentum now gathering for the re-routing and widening of the road, fears are growing that the proposed toll scheme could slow down East Anglia’s economic recovery.

 A14 Toll Scheme fears

Several regional MPs have expressed concern that if no proper alternative is provided for, market towns such as St Ives could be harmed by a substantial increase in traffic if attempting to avoid the Toll.

The A14 currently carries 85,000 vehicles per day, many more than it was designed for and congestion itself is a cost to business efficiency. The haulage industry in particular has voiced concerns about effectively subsidising the £1.5 billion cost via a toll system.  The Department of Transport’s case is that the government will still bear the brunt of the cost of the scheme, that there will be no Toll plazas to slow traffic flow, and the hauliers can consider travel at night time.

What is not in doubt is that something needs to be done although out of twenty five national road schemes the A14 is the only one being funded by a Toll……interesting, despite the fact that it is one of the most important roads in the country, linking Felixstowe and the east coast ports to a large part of the country !
