Well amongst the doom and gloom we are consistently reminded of by the media, its refreshing to see that HMV have been taken over so quickly - or strictly we say the debt has been acquired from HMV's lenders
OK apparently they already own HMV Canada but what this does show is that at least someone has confidence in the high street ! In the regional area that Barker Storey Matthews has a presence, we have seen an increase in retail property available but it has to be said that it's more a case of secondary retail units rather than prime. Peterborough retail property appears to have fared reasonably well and this is probably as a result of a strong regional centre such as Queensgate with a large John Lewis store attracting visitors to the city. We are aware of a number of leases available by way of assignment and inevitably there will be one or two shop units available in the centre, but overall Peterborough has done OK
Primark have recently opened their new store in Peterborough city centre and that has also helped to bring the shoppers in. Indeed when it opened, for those who like to do their shopping quickly it was a question of avoiding the location as it was mobbed! However retail property in other areas of the city have been let - the former Clintons Cards unit in Bridge Street was not on the market for long and has now been taken by The Entertainer.
