We have been surprised recently that a number of our clients have not realised that their commercial properties, when also having status as listed buildings, are exempt from empty business rates liability.

It is not safe to assume that local authorities will not collect rates as normal, and we have had a number of clients who have been able to claim backdated payments where they have continued to pay their rates unknowingly. If you are the owner of a vacant listed commercial building, office building shop unit or something more unusual then it is worth checking that you have not been paying empty rates.  If you have, let Barker Storey Matthews know and we will negotiate a rebate with the billing authority !
