Barker Storey Matthews Professional department undertook a review of a client’s portfolio and recommended an appeal was lodged against the rateable value on a large distribution warehouse in Peterborough which comprised two buildings totalling just over 100,000 sq ft. The property was split between two assessments. An appeal was lodged on the basis that the current assessments should be merged and that the rates per sq m applied with the rating assessments were excessive.

We successfully negotiated a substantial reduction in the rateable value from a combined £442,000 to a revised single assessment of £335,000. This has led to our client receiving a significant rebate and a lower rates bill moving forward during the current list. The outcome demonstrates that substantial savings can be made in business rates liabilities with professional advice and local knowledge of the market.
