Julian Welch, Director at Barker Storey Matthews, Peterborough’s largest firm of Commercial Property Agents, acquired the property on behalf of Subway.
Julian has acted for Subway for over 15 years, and during that time has acquired in excess of 300 stores for the brand across the Country, but primarily in the eastern region. He comments “I remember when Subway first came to see me about a shop I was marketing in London. At the time they had only got a handful of stores in the UK and were struggling to find sites, and to find landlords who would entertain what was, at that time, a relatively fledgling operation in the UK. They never did take the shop I was marketing, but I listened to them, and started looking for sites for them on the off-chance that I might find something suitable. It took a while, but I remember that first deal very well – it was in Essex – and it took for ever to complete because the landlord kept changing his mind about accepting Subway as a tenant.”
“15 years on and Subway has more stores in the UK and Ireland than any other fast food operator, including McDonalds. That is some growth rate, and I am very proud to have played my small part in it. But we still want more! Typically we look for units from between 750 and 1,500 sq ft, but will go smaller particularly in locations such as airports, stations and food courts. We take roadside units, units on retail parks and leisure schemes, neighbourhood centres, high streets, petrol stations – pretty much anywhere in fact. I’m looking forward to site number 2,500!”
