A new haberdashery shop which will also host sewing and craft classes and parties is setting up in retail premises in the centre of St Ives, Cambridgeshire, confirms agent Barker Storey Matthews.

Escape and Create Ltd has taken a five-year lease on 40a The Broadway – 133.8 sq m (1,400 sq ft) of self-contained retail premises with office and workshop space on the upper floor.

Escape and Create Ltd is the brainchild of Julie Miles who set up the business two years ago after 20 years working in the corporate world. The business was first established to teach sewing and crafting skills with a roster of expert tutors on its books.

Now, after responding to requests from her loyal clientele, Julie is taking the next step with the business and is setting up a shop which will be the largest, dedicated haberdashery in the local area.

The new premises will continue to support the original side of the business.

Julie Miles explains, “In deciding to set up the haberdashery shop to complement the other side of the business, I wanted to find retail premises in which I could host the hands-on sewing and crafting aspect of the business too.

The search ended with 40a The Broadway because the combination of the St Ives location, retail space on the ground floor and the expanse of workshop space on the upper floor couldn’t be better for me and my clientele.

We are scheduled to open in November.”

As well as acting as the letting agent on the property, Barker Storey Matthews manages the property on behalf of the landlord and sees Escape and Create Ltd as part of a wider picture of a more rounded retail offering in St Ives.

Matthew Hunt, Barker Storey Matthews Huntingdon, commented, “A traditional wool and fabric shop closed down in the town a number of years ago and now Escape and Create Ltd is bringing a modern twist to haberdashery and crafting.

The phenomenon of home and artisan crafters turning what were once hobbies into thriving businesses has helped fuel the revival of independent retailers trading alongside national chains in bustling market towns such as St Ives.”
