The Autumn Statement in 2014 contained a provision (2.129 –in the property tax section) that for Rating Appeals lodged after 31st March 2015 any savings made due to a reduction in assessment will only be backdated to 1st April 2015 rather than 1st April 2010 as is currently the case.

This could obviously make a big difference to any refunds obtained if an appeal results in a reduction in Rateable Value.  Ratepayers considering making an appeal should therefore do so by the 31st March 2015 deadline.

The Valuation Office could still make their own proposal if an assessment was clearly incorrect and if they do by 01 April 2016 the savings can still be backdated to 2010 but of course there is no guarantee or perhaps incentive for the Valuation Office to make their own proposal!


The exact wording was “The Government will change the rules so that alterations to RV can only be backdated to the period between 01/04/2010 to 01/04/2015 for VO alterations before 01/04/2016 and ratepayer appeals before 01/04/2015 “
