Barker Storey Matthews has successfully sold St John Ambulance’s current facility at Barton Road, Cambridge, whilst at the same time acquiring Units 3 & 4, The Business Centre in Cherry Hinton for their new site.

The former unit at 3 Barton Road was no longer fit for purpose and as a result SJA needed to relocate to a more modern facility. The property attracted significant interest due to its location in the hugely popular Newnham Ward area of Cambridge, plus the potential it offers for redevelopment. After going to sealed bids the property was sold above asking price, subject to its current use as a training facility.

In addition to the disposal of SJA’s former site, BSM were able to acquire their new location; Units 3 & 4 The Business Centre in Cherry Hinton. SJA purchased the property for an undisclosed sum and are going to use the significantly more modern site as a training and admin centre whilst also making use of the warehouse space for their ambulances and other equipment.

Commenting on the move, SJA’s head of property David Heelas said, “We were delighted with the work done by BSM, their local knowledge and enthusiasm found us a good property for our future requirements in a very active market, and were able to co-ordinate this with a simultaneous sale of our existing Barton Road property at a very good price.  A short term leaseback of Barton Road was agreed, which enables us to fit out the new property and move without disruption to the services we provide.”

Ben Green, Director at BSM who handled the relocation for SJA said, “I am really pleased that we were able to not only dispose of their former property but secure a much more suitable facility in Cambridge where availability of premises is very scarce. Our in depth knowledge of the local market and extensive list of property contacts enabled us to carry out the relocation smoothly and on financially attractive terms for the charity. In addition to our agency expertise, we were also able to draw on BSM’s comprehensive range of other services to facilitate this job, including planning and development advice, building surveys and valuation advice. SJA provide an invaluable service to the local community and I am proud that we were able to deal with the whole process swiftly and smoothly with a successful outcome”.

Dodson Jones acted for the purchaser of 3 Barton Road, whilst Savills acted for the vendor of Units 3 & 4 The Business Centre.
